Updates on what’s happening in the weekly improv jam sessions.

Maximum Playtime Jam

Tonight’s jam is all about playing.  There will be no side coaching, no instruction and no corrections.  Sometimes we focus so much on learning lots of techniques that we never give ourselves the opportunity to try them out… so tonight you’re being encouraged to play as many scenes as you can. Everyone.  Me included.  Make mistakes.  Make as many as you like – coz you’ll learn from them.  No one will be judging and no one will be correcting so try stuff out.

Tonight will be in three sections.

1) Shortform games out of a hat

2) Open scenes

3) Longform montages (basically lots of open scenes off the back of one suggestion)

You’re encouraged to try out everything you’ve learned in different workshops and just PLAY!

See you tonight at 7.30pm for two hours of playtime.

Improv Jam: Thursday 16th February

This week’s jam: BRING IT ON

This week’s jam is run by Nick.

Just like in the wondrous film Bring It On we must bring ‘it’, and place ‘it’ in the ‘on’ position during our improv scenes. So this week – being pushed and encouraged to BRING IT. There will be lots of capitalisations throughout the jam. We’ll be giving scenes more; more energy, more ideas, more commitment and taking them to the next level where ever that might be. Open scenes and enthusiasm.

Usual place & time:
The Blue Room, TAO Nottingham, Station Street, Nottingham
7.30pm – 9.30pm
£2

ImprovJam: Thursday 9th Feb

Keeping rollercoasters on the rails

Thursday 9th February

This week’s jam is being run by Martin.

This week’s jam will be devoted to the various “rollercoaster” games that we play, where the players have to make changes of tone or style during a scene – with hilarious consequences!

In these games (Genre Rollercoaster, Around the World, Emotional Rollercoaster), the switches sometimes happen at the expense of scene and character coherence. This makes me sad, and when I am sad there is blood.

With that in mind, we’ll be mucking about with (sorry, “workshopping”) these games so that they can flow more smoothly.

When we as players can not only make rapid switches in genre/accent/emotion, but create compelling scenes AT THE SAME TIME, we can sparkle like vampires in the daylight and then the audience will give us the love we crave.

Usual place & time:
The Blue Room, TAO Nottingham, Station Street, Nottingham
7.30pm – 9.30pm
£2

The Anton Chekhov Jam Thursday 26th January

This week is a David jam:

A loaded gun must be fired…

… using what has been put forward in a scene to bring it to its logical (and funniest) conclusion.

7.30pm in the Blue Room. £3.

You can check out the jam and workshop schedule here: Jam and Worshop Schedule and the the upcoming shows here.

Extra Jammy Thursday

Thursday 19th January 2012… the day the jam, for one week only, gets a mini-extension.

Same £2 price… but an extra half hour of improvised daftness

This week’s jam is run by Lloydie.  It starts at 7.30 and there will be lots of chances to get up and do scenes with a variety of people.  There’s going to be a lot of “doing” this week.  Lots of it.

PLUS: From around 9pm, Pete will be joining us with his keyboard and we’ll be doing some improvised songs.  Now, some people get a bit “OMG” when we talk about improvising a song.  a) you will not be forced to sing (you can just watch this bit of the jam if you’d prefer) and b) it will be made as easy as possible.  Remember it’s improv so if you make a “mistake” it’s all part of the scene.

As a result of Pete joining us around 9pm, we’ll be extending the jam until 10pm.  If you’ve already made plans for after 9.30, that’s fine, there will be a space for a dignified exit.

So, in summary, lots of scenework, lots of support and a little bit of music too.  Now that’s the sort of jam Robertson’s would be proud of (hopefully).
