Improv Beginners

This is designed as an introduction to the basics of comedic improvisation over six weekly sessions.  Each week will focus on different techniques and your instructor will coach you to help get the best out of you.  You’ll learn how improv is a supportive, collaborative form where we all have a part to play. The workshop will be conducted in a positive, supportive environment.  This course is useful for those wanting to explore and pursue improv further, and also for those who wish to use improv techniques to improve their public speaking, listening and social skills.

This course will cover:

• Yes…and.  How to build agreement in scenes
• Defining characters.  How to contribute to the scene.
• Object and environment work.
• Scene-based short form games – allowing you a structure to practice your skills
• Open-scenes.  Scenes without shortform restrictions.
• Scene structure and heightening.  How to get the most funny out of your scene.

Course dates:

Mondays starting 13 MAY 2013 (six weeks in total).  REGISTER NOW (form below).  Classes will run from 7pm – 10pm.

Improv Intermediate

This course follows on from our beginners course and helps you build on basic scene-work to create funny, compelling scenes.  If you already have some improv experience you may, in some circumstances, be able to skip our beginners level.  (If you think you might qualify please contact the instructor and give details of your experience and tuition).  This level draws on the style MissImp has developed as a group in terms of scene-work and style.  It is a mix of Del Close inspired longform theory and the group’s shortform sensibilities and history.  Over six weeks you’ll learn these stylistic points and create a variety of weird, wonderful and funny scenes.

This course will cover:

• Advanced agreement.  What we “Yes…and” and when.
• Character endowment and relationships.
• Finding the funny part 1. Noticing the unusual thing
• Finding the funny part 2.  Exploiting the unusual thing
• Stylistic points.  Edits, tags and second beats.
• Putting it all together.

Prerequisites:  You must have taken Improv Beginners or have equivalent experience / training with MissImp or another improv group.

Improv Advanced

This course follows on from our Improv Intermediate and is structured as a series of six masterclasses that allow you to work on different areas of improvised comedy.  To attend this course you must either have attended our intermediate class or you will have considerable improv experience.  This will be judged on a case-by-case basis but we would usually expect to have seen your work at one of our Thursday jam sessions, and know your background in order to assess if this level is for you yet.  At this level you will get detailed feedback and side coaching on your scenes and get the chance to develop your performance style in different areas.  This will draw on the Del Close / Chicago style of scene work, and on MissImp’s background as a UK improv group.

This level will cover:

• Group scenes.
• Intuitive scenework.
• Developing and playing compelling games.
• Finding interesting characters.
• Different forms and formats.
