Improv Beginners
This is designed as an introduction to the basics of comedic improvisation over six weekly sessions. Each week will focus on different techniques and your instructor will coach you to help get the best out of you. You’ll learn how improv is a supportive, collaborative form where we all have a part to play. The workshop will be conducted in a positive, supportive environment. This course is useful for those wanting to explore and pursue improv further, and also for those who wish to use improv techniques to improve their public speaking, listening and social skills.
This course will cover:
- Yes…and. How to build agreement in scenes
- Defining characters. How to contribute to the scene.
- Object and environment work.
- Scene-based short form games – allowing you a structure to practice your skills
- Open-scenes. Scenes without shortform restrictions.
- Scene structure and heightening. How to get the most funny out of your scene.

As a student of this class you also qualify for a concessionary rate for the MissImp In Action show at The Glee Club in Nottingham. You’ll be able to see the show at 7.30pm on Friday March 30th for just £3 instead of £6. We recommend seeing shows as it allows you to see the techniques we teach in action.
Improv Intermediate
This course follows on from our beginners course and helps you build on basic scene-work to create funny, compelling scenes. If you already have some improv experience you may, in some circumstances, be able to skip our beginners level. (If you think you might qualify please contact the instructor and give details of your experience and tuition). This level draws on the style MissImp has developed as a group in terms of scene-work and style. It is a mix of Del Close inspired longform theory and the group’s shortform sensibilities and history. Over six weeks you’ll learn these stylistic points and create a variety of weird, wonderful and funny scenes.
This course will cover:
- Advanced agreement. What we “Yes…and” and when.
- Character endowment and relationships.
- Finding the funny part 1. Noticing the unusual thing
- Finding the funny part 2. Exploiting the unusual thing
- Stylistic points. Edits, tags and second beats.
- Putting it all together.
