Improvisation – A Skill For Life
There are thousands of courses out there to develop yourself professionally and personally. Some are fun, some are focussed intently on one narrow aspect of information management. There are a handful of skills which you can apply to everything you do and which will give you confidence and help to you be better at everything. We’d humbly submit improvisation as being that kind of skill.
Learning improv develops our listening skills and how we pay attention to each other and the world around us. We’re encouraged to treat each other well, as people who deserve to be listened, who have ideas that are worth playing with and exploring. The basic skills of listening and agreement are vital for team work, dealing with others and for attending to and improving our own work, whatever it is.
Did we also mention that it’s fun? It’s ridiculously fun. You’ll be playing with other people in a safe and friendly environment where you’ll be encouraged to say exactly what you’re thinking, and even better, to stop thinking and focus on responding in the moment to whatever anyone throws at you. It’s like meditation with laughter. Maybe you think you need to be funny to do improv: you don’t. Improv comedy doesn’t focus on jokes or pre-prepared material, we find comedy in the unexpected, unplanned and in the connections you find between ideas and each other.
- If you want to have a good time, improv will do that.
- If you want to improve your acting or performance skills, improv will help.
- If you like telling jokes, improv will make you better at it.
- If you want to improve your confidence for presentations, meeting people or just to feel better about being yourself, improv will be good for you.
- If you want to meet people who will make you laugh, come and do improv.
