Improv Drop-In: Thursday 2 May 2019

HEADS UP! We are not at Malt Cross for the next few weeks as they’ve got a hideous flooding problem to resolve! Instead, we’re upstairs at The Castle pub this week.

This week’s drop-in: Guess the Character, WIN A PRIZE!

Brought to you by Elliott.

A great actor can play anyone in any situation, but you don’t often see people lining up around the block to see the most critically adored actors. You usually see people lining up to see the stars with genuine charisma like Al Pacino, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, George Clooney, Will Smith and Paris Hilton, who in every role are themselves and don’t often play different people, eg Al Pacino as the cop, Al Pacino as the lawyer. George Clooney as the suave father figure, Dwayne Johnson as the All-Star American Football player / Hero A / Hero B / Hero / C etc, Paris Hilton as the wise ol’ Librarian. They play themselves and people fall in love with the character of them. That’s what makes them a star.
This week you will be draw a certain character or characteristic from Elliott’s bag of characters, which you will use your charismatic improvisational skills to play throughout a series of 2-4 person open scenes. Don’t worry about trying to be Harrison Ford – it’s always you as Harrison Ford! Use yourself as inspiration for how you would play that character. Pay attention, because at the end of the drop-in we’ll sit down to guess who played what and those who sucessfully guess correctly will go in the hat at the end to win an amazing prize!

Improv Jam – Thursday 2 March 2017

This week’s jam: Take It Personal

The jam is brought to you by Ben.

Take It PersonalIn improv it is the relationship between characters that fuel our scenes, and it is all too easy to wander off into high concept work losing touch with our core characters who are the ones who make scenes compelling.

This week we are going to look at keep our scenes riveted to our characters and our audience riveted to us. Expect an emotion-focused session that works on building relationships between characters and finding the simple comedy of human interaction. Simple improv, as easy as having a conversation.

Improv Jam – Thursday 16 February 2017

This week’s jam: Objectify Yourself

The jam is brought to you by Liam.

It’s fun to be different people, but what about different things? Things are amazing. There’s endless opportunity to be objects, and to play otherwise inanimate stuff, and this week we’re going to explore your potential as more than just a bag of meat and sticks – we’re going to learn what it’s like to be a thing.

Improv Jam – Thursday 2 February 2017

This week’s jam: Bring It Back

The jam is brought to you by Lloydie.

We’ve been doing lots of fun stuff with character recently, but for all the effort we put into making our charming, weird and funny characters we often just discard them after a few minutes and sit down. What a shame! This week we’re looking at creating characters and bringing them back – remember, a character is for a bunch of scenes, not just for Christmas (that’s your weird aunt Ronnie and uncle Merk you’re thinking of).

Improv Jam: Thursday 7 February 2014

This week’s jam: MMRWG

This week’s improv jam is run by: ParkyMMRWG

How many of your daily interactions with human beings are with just one other person? In the pub, with your family, in meetings, at work – most of our lives involve interacting with groups of people.

So, for one week only we’re going to throw out the ‘there must be two people in a scene’ rule. We’ll do loads of open scenes which will require three, four or even six people to make them work. Names will come out of the hat so you’ll be thrown into a Massive Multiplayer Real World Game (MMRWG) with a bunch of other people. And, as in real life, it will involve a lot of giving and taking and a lot of shutting up while other people are speaking.

Improv Jam: Thursday 7th February

7.30-9.30pm
The Corner, 8 Stoney Street Nottingham NG1 1LH
Entry Price: £3
