Gorilla Burger – Improvised Comedy Carnage – Thursday 14 March 2019

Gorilla Burger – Mad March!

Woah, somehow it’s halfway through March already! Get your game on tonight with Cupid’s improv games and scenes where YOU are the star!

This month, Ben will direct the action, leading players into our new long-form sections as well as the jam! Alongside the usual names and games being drawn from a hat, in each half there will also be a seven-person, ten minute longform slot. If you’re in a longform slot, you’re not in the hat of names and vice versa for that half – more playtime for everyone! Sign up for the longform teams will be first come, first served, right at the start before the show begins – so make sure you’re there early enough…

New to all this? Ace. If you fancy having a go, we’ll pop your name in a hat with some other fabulous folk. When we draw your name it will be time to shine! We’ll pop you in a game or a scene with some of those aforementioned fabulous folk, and comedy will ensue, honest! Of course, you don’t have to perform! You can remain happily anonymous in the audience, settle back with a pint, and enjoy the show.

Gorilla Burger – The Lovers Edition

Our monthly jam is back with a vengeance this Valentine’s Day, ready to crash Cupid’s party with a host of improv games and scenes where YOU are the star!

This month, Liam takes the wheel as we trial some new stuff: long-form sections in the jam!

Get Consent To Come Out On Saturday Night

More MissImp silliness happens tomorrow night (Saturday 13th).  We’ve got a new format that we’ve only tried out once before in front of an audience of 7 people, 1 dog and a hat-stand.  The hat-stand ruddy loved it!

Consenting Partners will see various pairings entertain you with improvised scenes tomorrow night at The City Gallery, Long Row in Nottingham (down little alley to the left of Primark and The Works).  It’s all two-person stuff.  Duos.  Partners in improvised daftness.  Tomorrow night is especially exciting as we have a guest partnership coming all the way up from “That London” to entertain you.

Project 2 is a two man improvised sci-fi which may or may not feature robots (it probably will have robots).  The men behind it are Chris Mead and Jonathan Monkhouse who are beloved on the London improv scene and who both studied at the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago last July, along with MissImp’s very own Lloydie.  Speaking exclusively to MissImp, Lloydie said “When I found out Chris and Jonathan did a two man improvised sci-fi I immediately wanted to see it.  The only trouble is I’m way too lazy to go to London so I figured it would be beyond ace to have them appear in Nottingham.”

The show will also feature “Atomic Budgerigar” – a collaboration of Nick Tyler and Marilyn Bird from MissImp… and “Bagging Area” featuring Martin Findell and Lloydie from MissImp.

Come.  Enjoy the fun.  It’s only £3 and it starts at 7.30pm.  And there will be beer!

Building Our Scene: Nottingham’s Growing Improv Community

I believe big things are happening in Nottingham.  Big improv things.  Exciting and big and incredibly attractive.

MissImp already gets one of the largest regular audiences for an improv troupe in the UK.  I know, right?  Us!  Ok, sometimes the numbers are what we want, and we all want them higher, but think about that.  Aside from a couple of large professional groups that have been around a long time, month in, month out, MissImp is certainly in the top 5 improv groups in the UK for regular audiences at a regular improv night.  That’s pretty damn special.

Improv is growing in the UK and we can have a role in making it a bigger, more recognised art form in this country.  I know I certainly want that for us as a group.  This may seem funny coming from a guy who just missed four Thursday jams in a row (In three and a half years I’ve never missed more than two consecutive jams – I hate missing one).  Thing is, I’ve been away doing improv, learning improv, spending time with improvisers and it has done two things.  Firstly, it has further invigorated my love of improvising.  Hard to imagine, I know – but I’m even more fired up about it.  Secondly, it has made me realise the huge opportunity we have in Nottingham.

Nottingham is one of the most landlocked places in the UK.  We can draw people in from a wide area.  Unlike London we don’t have nearly as much other competition from other performing arts.  We are in exactly the right place to make MissImp a centre of improvised excellence with a great national reputation.  In the improv world, thanks to getting ourselves out and about, we are now better known than we have ever been.  Thanks to getting great teachers over from the US, and from within the UK, we have increased our skills tremendously in the last 2 years.

So what next?  Parky has set-up Little Imps, Teen Imps are on the way, and there’s an advanced improv course about to go on sale. Added to this there will be more beginners classes, more longform shows, our residency continues at The Glee Club and there will be the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s best teachers.  It’s an exciting time to be in MissImp.  In a year from now I think we will have an even more vibrant improv community in Nottingham.  We still need to work on getting the word out and getting greater audiences, and we still need to keep working on our skills, but I honestly believe we are in one of the most exciting and fun places to be doing improvised comedy in the UK at the moment.  Let’s make the most of it!

NEW CHARACTER WORKSHOP IN JANUARY

WHO THE F*** ARE YOU? – LONGFORM WORKSHOP
SATURDAY 7TH JANUARY – 10AM – 5PM

This is a one day playtime session, with character work exercises designed to help improvisers give clear offers, perspectives and find the funny bit of the scene quicker.  There will be three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon to do scenework exercises, work on developing compelling characters and, at the end of the day, a chance to put it all together in a longform piece.

Lloydie has been described as one of the biggest longform improv geeks in the UK – and he’s proud of that. He’ll be drawing on his experience as a regular performer with MissImp (4 stars at the Edinburgh Fringe with a show they only had 4 hours notice to perform), and from the various longform trainings he’s attended both in the UK and in the USA.  This one-off workshop is being offered at a ridiculously low price of £15 for the whole day (£2.50 per hour!!!).  Places will be limited to an absolute maximum of 20.

If you’re interested and you want to book get in touch with Lloydie now as we’re advertising this session widely to a number of improv groups in the area.  His email address is email[at]lloydie.net (replace the [at] with @)
